The Human Microbiome
In silico metagenomic studies have revealed that the human microbiome harbors an immense and largely untapped reservoir of biosynthetic diversity. This makes it a highly promising source for the discovery of anti-infective natural products, as well as for tracking the distribution of associated antibiotic resistance genes. Despite these advances, the human microbiome remains largely underexplored with respect to their encoded chemical space, particularly when it comes to identifying novel anti-infective scaffolds.
